Myths & Facts about Assisted Living

Packing up and moving to a senior living community can be a big lifestyle change. After years in the same house, it can be a tough decision for older adults and their families to reach. While research shows how life and health often improve with such a move, the many myths surrounding senior living often keep an older adult from doing it.

This is why we thought it was important to help seniors and their families separate fact from fiction when it comes to independent and assisted living.

Popular Senior Living Myths & Assisted Living Facts

Myth #1: Assisted living communities are just prettier versions of nursing homes

Fact: Assisted living communities are very different than nursing homes. While nursing homes have come a long way in the past decade or two, they are still designed for adults who have more complex health care needs. So many of them still look and feel like a clinic or hospital.

By contrast, assisted living communities are warm and inviting and look similar to an upscale apartment community. But looks aren’t the only difference. Where nursing homes focus on medical needs, the caregivers at an assisted living community provide support with the activities of daily living. This includes assistance with bathing, dressing, medication and more. In providing help with these tasks, an assisted living community can help an older adult stay safe and maintain their independence longer.

Myth#2: Assisted living communities are disappointing and lonely places

Fact: Nothing could be further from the truth! The life enrichment and wellness opportunities at today’s assisted living communities range from book clubs, watercolor painting classes, billiards and more. Residents can join as many activities as they choose to each day.

Myth #3: No pets are allowed in senior living communities

Fact: This persistent myth is one that often keeps older adults from even considering a move. The truth is, we love pets too! Many senior living communities welcome well-behaved, four-legged friends.

Myth #4: You can’t bring your car to an assisted living community

Fact: Not true. Some seniors bring their cars with them when they move, at least for a while. Many discover after moving, however, that they no longer need their car and enjoy saving money on car expenses and insurance. Most senior living communities offer transportation services to make it easier to go shopping, attend local events and get back and forth to physician appointments.

Myth #5: Senior living is only for “rich people”

Fact: This is another myth we are happy to break! When you factor in all of the costs of living at home —even if your mortgage is paid off — you will discover how much of a value independent and assisted living truly is. From snow removal and yard care to home maintenance expenses, appliances, mortgage insurance, groceries, utilities and transportation, the costs of aging at home can really add up. This is especially true if you need the assistance of a private duty caregiver. All of these services and amenities are included in the price at a senior living community.
